The United States is a dizzyingly large place to explore – it is not only a huge area, it is also littered with many different attractions and dozens of famous cities. For travellers planning to come here this can be a bit dispiriting as it is almost impossible to see it all. Luckily, cheap flights to New York and other cities have made it easy to make multiple trips here. That said, it is important to fit in as much as possible on each journey to the shores of North America – so, here are three sights to see on your first visit to this great country.

New York City is an amazing place, and it is no wonder that it has been immortalised in so many movies, books and works of art. This city will captivate you with its buzz, its shops and countless yellow taxi-cabs. For culture buffs you can head down to Broadway or take in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Sports fans can see New York’s legendary sports teams, while everyone will enjoy the chance to eat incredible food: you can find everything from great bargain pizzas to high-class dining in trendy restaurants.

Moving on from the Big Apple you should head down to the Southern gem of Savannah – this city couldn’t be more different than New York as it has quiet, pristine streets lined with cafes, pleasant squares and shops. The pace of life is slow, as people stroll languorously through the heat, while the hospitality is incredible and you will be treated like a family member everywhere you go. The food is also wonderful and you can experience classic southern fare: dine on fried chicken, chilli, seafood and cornbread to really get into the local scene.

Finally, you should hop on a plane (or embark on an epic road trip) to San Francisco. This northern Californian city is incredibly beautiful as it looks out onto the Pacific from rolling hills. Check out sights like Alcatraz prison and the Golden Gate Bridge before heading into the city to eat great Sushi and see some local culture. San Francisco is incredibly diverse and you can see concerts, plays and shows which draw on many different cultures for inspiration. The best way to get to San Francisco is by flights into its airport, yet you can also find cheap flights to Los Angeles which will put you within driving distance.

This whistle stop tour will see you cover huge swathes of land and take you to some of America’s most famous cities. It will also show you the huge cultural differences that exist between different parts of the country; indeed, the busy streets of New York are a far cry from the relaxed avenues of San Francisco. This is a country which changes with every mile marker, and you can find a lifetime’s worth of things to see and do here. These three destinations are a start, but one trip is definitely not enough and you will have to return.
