Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, Sharm El Sheikh is one of the world’s most popular scuba diving locations and an ideal place to go and improve your underwater skills.
Scuba diving is rapidly growing in popularity, particularly as part of an activity holiday abroad as more and more people take advantage of the cheaper costs of diving schools in – generally – warmer, more exotic countries like Egypt.
Some visitors will simply want a taster of the scuba diving experience, and after a few hours of training and learning how to use the equipment you will begin to see what all the fuss is about, although oftentimes beginners are kept in swimming pools until they advance. For others, Sharm El Sheikh is a cheaper place to practice for the PADI course and earn the diving qualification that will allow them to dive just about anywhere in the world.
Sharm El Sheikh – or the Sharm as it is affectionately referred to by its residents – is located between Mount Sinai and the Red Sea. It is one of the main cities in the Southern Sinai province and in recent years has become an extremely popular destination for visitors from all around the world. Most visit from scuba diving, although there is still plenty to offer in the way of beach relaxation, shopping and day trips to some of Egypt’s other popular cities and attractions.
Egypt’s climate is one of the main factors that make it so popular with divers. Year round sunshine means diving is pleasant even in winter. In fact, Egypt’s climate can be so hot in the summer that is can often be more enjoyable to visit in winter. Year round water temperatures can range from 19 degrees in the north to 29 in the south, very inviting, particularly for those visiting from colder climates such as Northern Europe.
Of course climate isn’t everything. Sharm El Sheikh offers plenty to see underwater, including many famous wrecks – The Giannis D, The Thistlegorm and The Carnatic are some of the more familiar names – , interesting and colourful species of fish, caves, coral reefs and more. The clarity of the water makes the whole experience one not to be missed.
So whether you’re just learning how to put your flippers on or you’re a scuba pro, there’s plenty to experience on a holiday in Sharm El Sheikh.
