If you’re looking to go on a break where you can spend time soaking up the sun and working on your tan, then consider Malta as your next holiday destination.
And as the country’s location in the heart of the Mediterranean means it receives sunshine all year round, you could be forgiven for spending your entire holiday doing nothing but lazing around on the beach.
To do so, however, would mean that you miss out on the numerous captivating attractions and activities the country has to offer. And with so many things for you to see and do, you are bound to find something that caters to your tastes during the course of a low cost holiday to Malta.
This could certainly be the case if you’re a motoring enthusiast, as the Malta Classic Car Museum gives you the chance to see a wide range of vintage cars and motorcycles.
Located in the north-east town of Qawra, the museum also contains a selection of model cars, automobile memorabilia, a cinema and gift-shop, so there should be plenty for you to check out.
Should you be something of a foodie, then you will certainly find a holiday to Malta to be to your taste. The archipelago’s history of occupation by other countries and civilisations over the years means that its cuisine draws influences from across the world.
You may want to spend some time sampling local dishes such as bigilla, kapunata – a Maltese version of ratatouille – and pastizzi. And for something to wash it down with, you may be interested to know a range of wines are made here, including chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. If you want to find out more about how wine is produced, why not go on a tour of the country’s vineyards and wineries?
If you’re looking to spend a portion of your Malta holiday learning more about the country’s extensive history then a trip to its seven Megalithic Temples could well be advised.
While five of these are situated on Malta itself, the other two are located on Gozo – the most northerly of the three islands that make up the country. No matter which of these you visit you will be able to see the intricate decorations of the buildings close up, while also gaining an insight into how the tradition of constructing temples has been passed down from generation to generation.
These buildings date back as far as 5000 BC and are said to be the oldest freestanding temples in the whole world.
And as they have Unesco World Heritage Site status, you can be sure that a visit to these developments provides you with the opportunity to learn something.
However, as only a limited number of visitors are permitted to enter these temples at any one time, you may want to ensure you arrive in plenty of time.
The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola can also give you an insight into Malta’s vast history. This enormous subterranean structure is believed to date back to 2500 BC, with its multitude of caverns and chambers accidently uncovered by a stonemason in 1902.
Like the Megalithic Temples, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum also has Unesco World Heritage Site status.
If you want to get some exercise over the course of your Malta holiday, there may be few better ways to do this than to hire a bicycle. Not only can you get some fresh air but you can also see the fascinating countryside and take in its stunning natural wildlife.
While you should endeavour to spend at least part of your holiday to Malta on the beach, make sure that you check out some of the fascinating attractions to be found away from the sands.
