See Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps)

The square is dominated by the magnificent Travertine stairway of Trinità dei Monti.  The work was projected by Francesco De Santis (1723-1726) to resolve the difference in height between the square at the bottom with the Barcaccia Fountain and the church at the top with its obelisk.  In the Spring the square becomes a perfect show with the stairs completely covered by large vases of multicoloured azaleas.

VIA VENETO

This is the most photographed street in Rome.  All the famous divas from cinema between the 50s and 60s were here.  Cinecittà, the Roman film studios, was the Italian Hollywood and Via Vento the perfect boulevard to spot VIPs including Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Anouk Aimé and Helmet Berger who frequently spent evenings in the cafes and local fashion houses, and Federico Fellini who became famous in the celebrated film Dolce Vita. To be famous was not only stars of the big screen but action, cheek and glamour, with names like Tazio Secchiarolj and Rino Barillari.

AVENTINO

The Aventino, is one of the seven hills in Rome.  Today the quarter presents splendid villas that transmit serenity and composure, with splendid churches plus numerous residences of religious orders.  The idea of walking inside, away from the chaotic traffic of the city, is an occasion not to miss, complying a type of magic of the long beckoning from the presence of the Bocca della Verità in the square.

Beside the Roseto Comunale and walking across the Piazzale La Malfa, there is the Circo Massimo, positioned in a sort of half way between the Palatino and the Aventino.  Once it was the great circus for shows of ancient Rome, today is only visible an immense space.  Nearby in the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, projected by Giovan Battista Piranesi in 1765, to the civic number three the surprising point of observation of a hole to allow vision through a type of natural gallery of plants, of the dome of St Peters.

 

CAMPO DE’FIORI

The most enjoyable purchases are in Campo de’Fiori, between stalls of the market and the small boutiques.  The market square, which existed already in the 4th Century, was site of inns for pilgrims and merchants and residence of courtiers.  Under the statue of Giordano Bruno, is a concentration of fruit stalls, and in the evening hundreds of youths arrive for an aperitif, giving life to the square.
