How to Mix Pleasure and Work on Your Next Business Trip

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

One of the best parts of working in business has got to be hands down the travel that comes along with remote business meetings and seminars across the nation and sometimes even in other parts of the world. Whether you are traveling locally, or you are going out of the country, there will always be a way to mix pleasure and work on the trip. Here are some fun things you can do the next time you are out of town on business; assuming you have the time.

Visit some local restaurants
Don’t waste your time in your hotel, or going to chain restaurants that you can find all over the country. Try visiting a restaurant that is locally owned and operated. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised at the talent and personality that other towns have to offer. If you like some of the restaurants that you visit, make sure you go online to leave a positive review for the business. It will help their online visibility and bring more customers. It’s a kind way of helping a town you have no connection to.

Get to know people that live there
Every town has its own personality. This also reflects the people that live in it. The next time you are out on a business trip, get to know some of the people in the place that you are visiting. Getting to know some of the locals is a great way to form an impression of what you think about the town. This could be an experience that can go either way, but that’s the fun of getting to know new places.

Take a tour
If the town that you are visiting has a tour guide to show you around, use it. This is the fastest and easiest way to explore the town that you are visiting and to explore the new territory. Guided tours are usually inexpensive to attend, and very informative. You will get to know the history and popular things about the town.

Park somewhere and walk around
Find a the busiest part of town, park, and walk around. It is easier to get a good feel for a busy town when you are walking around and slowly taking it all in. It is easier to visit shops, restaurants, and taverns this way. Usually the best part of town to park is where there is most traffic and most of the town’s shops will be in this part of town.

Take your work with you
If you are lucky enough to be able to take your work projects and office supplies with you, take them somewhere quiet so you can sit down, relax and get working. You can visit the local park and begin to work on your projects there. If your job is to be inspired and create new ideas for a company, visiting a new park may bring you the inspiration you need. This is a great time to enjoy what is in front of you, and get the most out of your business trip. It doesn’t have to be a park though. Some people may find they do their best work in coffee shops, or taverns. The location is your choice.

These are just a few suggestions you can use to have fun on your business trip. While it should not be treated like a vacation, there is no reason you should not have fun on your trip.
