How To Make Your Travel Money Go Further

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Would you like to travel more? Of course you would, vacations are fun, and much better than staying at home working. But they cost money too – The maths is simple enough really: the more cheaply youcan travel; the more often you can do it.

So how can you make your money go further and your Vacations last longer without breaking the bank? Here are a few tips:

Go for longer

The longer you go on holiday for, the lower the cost per day – by staying for longer you get more value out of the costs such as travelling, flights etc. You will also generally be able to negotiate better deals on accommodation depending on where you are going of course.

Go somewhere cheaper

Going somewhere just because the vacation package is cheap can cost you money. When booking; remember to consider the cost of food and entertainment whilst you are away. If you spend a little more to go somewhere cheaper you might be able to reduce the overall cost of your holiday whilst not having to worry so much about prices whilst you are there.

Get the best exchange rate

Plan ahead and check out the exchange rate movements in advance. A good currency converter will tell you whether the exchange rate is improving or getting worse, if it is the latter then buy now, but if the former then you might as well wait until you travel. Making money from currency exchange is tough certainly, but with a little planning you can get the most out of the money you would have to exchange anyway.

Go out of season

This is an obvious one, but you might be shocked by just how much difference it can make. If you had kids it might be difficult to be flexible on vacation dates, but sometimes even an extra day or two’s leeway can save you money. If you can go to popular locations outside of school holiday times and away from any special events your holidays will be cheaper.

Take a guide book

Even if you are going on a package vacation, taking a decent guide book can be a great investment. A guide book will help you to navigate your new surroundings without being ripped off or overcharged and will also help you to find the best value local restaurants and amenities.
