Stockholm is a lively and vibrant city with a range of historical and cultural attractions to visit. However, if you wish to venture into the countryside, you can’t go wrong with visiting Gripsholm Castle (Gripsholms slott).

Considered one of Sweden’s great buildings, the castle is situated around 60km west of the capital and is easily accessable on a day trip for those staying in Stockholm hotels. It sits next to Lake Mälaren in the town of Mariefred and its reflection in the crystal-clear water paints a romantic picture. The castle was built throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries on the site of an old fortress. Little of this fortress remains but this is more than compensated for by the stunning building which took its place. The castle is famous for its round towers and deep red brickwork, which offers a grandiose visage from across the water, something that was useful in its role as a place of defence. Sixteenth century Russian cannons highlight the building’s original function.

Built as a fortified castle by the Swedish Royal Family, it has also been used as a prison in its time. The castle was extensively renovated in the late nineteenth century, at a time when a third floor was added to the building.

Anyone currently staying in hotels in Copenhagen may think they have access to the best cultural Nordic delights but these tourists may well change their minds at this visitor attraction. Today, the castle serves as a museum which contains a wide range of works of art. The highlight of any visit is observing the National Collection of Portraits which is housed here. This contains pictures not only of famous historical figures such as Gustav Vasa (King Gustav I), who built the castle in 1537, but also pictures of contemporary figures such as ABBA songwriter Benny Andersson.

The maze of passageways and collection of rooms make for a pleasant stroll in which the delightful interiors can be observed. The theatre constructed by King Gustav III is a particular highlight. Furniture and handicrafts spanning over four centuries are on display whilst, if the weather is good, a walk around the stunning grounds comes highly recommended. If you have children with you, then they will enjoy theHjorthagen nature reserve where they can meet the royal deer.

Gripsholm Castle contains an excellent mix of cultural, historical and countryside pursuits and provides the perfect tonic if you crave getting out of the city and into the beauty of nature.
