Exploring the Caribbean

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Ask a group of people where they’d love to go on a dream holiday, and there’s a good chance one of the most popular destinations will be the sunny Caribbean. This group of islands has been favoured by holidaymakers for generations, evolving into a lucrative holiday destination suitable for all types of travellers.

The Caribbean is just as well suited to fun-packed family holidays as it is to outdoor adventure breaks and romantic honeymoons, though to some extent the type of holiday you’re hoping to enjoy could influence your choice of island.

Destinations like Barbados and Bermuda can be ideal for couples looking to spend some quality time together in idyllic surroundings, while lively Jamaica can be more appealing for single travellers. The English-speaking Cayman Islands, meanwhile, are among the best places to enjoy water sports such as diving and sailing.

To get the most out of your Caribbean holidays, it can be wise to plan some of your activities beforehand, especially if you’re travelling on a package holiday and trying to secure the best deals. There is a huge variety of things to see and do throughout the Caribbean, from jungle trekking to historical tours of significant sites, so you don’t have to spend all your time relaxing on the beach.

If you’re travelling with the family or a large group, you may also want to consider alternative accommodation options such as holiday villas, which could prove cheaper than hotel rooms. You can check what type of entertainment is provided to ensure that you’ll have enough to occupy you and your guests when winding down in the evening – especially important if you’re travelling with children.

As well as exploring the islands themselves, you may also wish to discover more about the local cultures of the places you’re visiting, which can really enrich your Caribbean holidays. Trying out the local cuisine is a great place to start, leaving your familiar meal choices behind and tucking in to some island delicacies like Jamaican curry and jerk or local fruits like plantains.

Caribbean rum and cocktails can also add to the island experience, and help you feel like you’re truly getting away from it all. If you’re visiting islands such as Jamaica, you might also not be able to resist trying out the world-famous nightlife, where you can hear everything from steel band concerts and reggae to international dance hits.
