Easter in Sydney

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Everyone loves Easter, and not just because it is perfectly acceptable to gobble up your own body weight in chocolate! With its two public holidays either side of the weekend, Easter enables us to have a real break without taking time off work, and with Anzac Day falling on the Tuesday after Easter Monday, Australians have an even longer holiday this year! However much holiday you have, you’re guaranteed a great time in Sydney over Easter as there are plenty of fantastic events around the city. So what are you waiting for? Book yourself a room in a fabulous Sydney hotel  and have a truly egg-cellent Easter!

Royal Easter Show

This huge annual event has top billing over Easter and is beloved by Sydney-siders and visitors in equal measure. Run since 1823, the show is a celebration of all things Australian and features an agricultural show, competitions, spectacular performances, an amusement park, and numerous stalls. Held in the Sydney Showground in Olympic Park, the show brings rural Australia to the city, with livestock, art, food and fashion displays, demonstrations such as cow-milking, sheep-shearing and wood chopping, fantastic live music, and the not-to-be-missed Sydney Royal Rodeo. There is so much to do at this vast show it can be hard to know where to start but the official site’s suggested itineraries are a real help to plan your perfect day.

Hoopla Festival

At Darling Harbour’s annual circus and street performer festival there’s never a dull moment. Held every Easter, this thoroughly entertaining event is completely free during the day, with only a nominal fee charged in the evening. The Hoopla Festival showcases jugglers, fire-eaters, trapeze artists, sword balancers, aerial ballet dancers, and a whole host of other performers. With the sensational performances in the Big Top, more intimate alternative acts in the Carnival of Dreams, and buskers performing throughout the venue, you are guaranteed to be entertained! There are plenty of great hotels near Darling Harbour so why not stay near all the action?

The Bald Archy

World famous for being the only art competition in existence to be judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Maude, The Bald Archy offers artists the chance to create satirical portraits of famous characters. The result is sometimes bizarre and always hilarious and the finalists exhibit all over Australia, drawing huge crowds. The exhibition in Sydney is held over Easter in the artsy neighbourhood of Darlinghurst and well worth a visit.

Schweppes Sydney Cup

The grand finale to the annual Sydney Carnival races takes place on Easter Saturday at prestigious Royal Randwick, and is an event that will entertain the entire family. Alongside top Group 1 racing and high fashion there is plenty to keep the kids amused, including pony rides, a petting zoo, face painters, a Circus Works tent, pony rides, a visit from the Easter bunny, and an Easter bonnet-making class after which they can parade around the track in their creations!

I can only recommend this. I’ve celebrated an Easter in Sydney with my family there and it was very nice. Europeans could learn something from Australians when it comes to Easter. You should go ahead and book that hotel for Easter 2012 if you were doubting.
