France is commonly regarded for its Parisian atmosphere, and the Riviera beaches along its Mediterranean Coast. But there are many other places to visit throughout the countryside. One of France’s most popular destinations is the commune of Chamonix.

Chamonix, or Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, is a mountain town in the Rhone-Alps of south-eastern France. Though the population of Chamonix is less than 10,000, millions of visitors come every year to ski, climb, paraglide, raft, and try the world-class canyonning. In any season, you can get your pumping rush of adrenaline. But if death defying sports are not your thing, then you can simply come for a stunning glimpse of the alpine scenery.

The best view in Chamonix is from the summit of the Auguille du Midi. This 3,842 meter ascent is made by cable car. When built in 1955, this was the highest cable car in the world. At the top you’ll find a viewing platform, a café and a gift shop, as well as several famous ski runs starting from the snowy summit.

Of all the places to visit in Chamonix, you should see the Mer de Glace. This famous glacier is accessed by train which departs from Chamonix. At 1,913 meters, take in the panoramic views, and then enter The Ice Cave which takes you into the heart of the glacier. At the top you will also find the crystal gallery, which displays an array of geological specimens collected from Mont Blanc.
