Accommodation options for French skiing holidays have come a long way since the major resorts first opened their doors. For some holidaymakers, the winter ski break is their main holiday so there is a huge selection to choose from when it comes to deciding where to stay – from a cheap and cosy hotel room, to a deluxe chalet for 12 people.
Ski chalets are probably the most traditional ski accommodation option and you’ll find some of the best ski chalets in Meribel, in fact the resort is famous for them. The Meribel planners have always insisted that all new accommodation be built in the chalet style and this has resulted in Meribel being a picturesque and pretty place to stay, with none of the hideous 60s and 70s architectural monstrosities some of the other French resorts suffer from. Ski chalets in Meribel range from those in the centre, to a slope side option, where you can get your skis onto powder as soon as you open the door. Meribel has recently introduced the Label Meribel quality assurance program under the auspices of the Tourist Office and it’s always worth checking to see if your chalet has this mark so that you know you’re getting a certain standard.
There are a huge number of chalet options, for groups from two upward, catered or non-catered, luxurious or basic, and most will also sort out lift passes and, if necessary, equipment hire. You can also find chalets with added extras like Jacuzzis and saunas to ease aching muscles, a balcony, satellite TV, boot warmer and Wi-Fi. If you look carefully you can find deals from £400 per person for a week’s accommodation including flights and transfers, although obviously the more luxury you’re looking for, the more the price will go up. Chalets are a great option in particular for families and groups as they can work out cheaper than booking a large number of hotel rooms.
Apartments are a great French ski holiday option for skiers on a budget and there is a huge selection of apartment accommodation across the French ski areas to choose from. Chamonix in particular has some great apartments, often newly refurbished and with fantastic mountain views. Prices range from around £300 a week for a two bed apartment wherever it is you are looking to stay and will of course rise depending on the level of luxury and closeness to the slopes or town centres.
Ski hotels are another option if you prefer the atmosphere of a larger type of accommodation, as well as easy access to the hotel bar without having to leave the building! There are rooms to suit all budgets in hotels across the French ski regions and most will offer different board options, from B&B to a full board experience. Luxury hotels like Kilimandjaro in Courchevel 1850 are lovely if you feel like splashing out – the hotel is made up of eight joined chalets and has a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and direct access to the piste. The hotel will set you back around £3,000 per person for a week’s accommodation, flights and transfers.
