The smell of the sea is one of the first things you will notice when you arrive at the South Street Seaport. It is located on the river and just steps from New York Harbor. In its day it was the location of an important shipping center. Today it is well preserved and a favorite with visitors to the city.
To begin your walk, arrive at the lighthouse at its entrance, across from John Street. Begin walking on the cobblestone street towards the water. On your right you will notice a long row of brick houses now filled with restaurants and shops. This is Schermerhorn Row, twelve buildings built in 1810 by Captain Schermerhorn.
Continue walking towards the water, cross South Street, and head towards the magnificent tall masted ships.
You can board them and take tours through them. The Lightship Ambrose seems small next to the big ships, but its beacon used to safely guide the ships into New York Harbor from 1908 through 1964 and it is an important part of the history of New York. You can also board and tour the Pioneer, circa 1885. And the Peking next to her, which is 347 feet long and carries 32 sails when at sea.
Across from the antique ships is Pier 17, a shopping mall that you should take a spin through because it also has seafood restaurants and bars with close-up views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the river, views which are especially spectacular at night.
Back on the street, stroll down Front Street, a cobblestone street lined with historic 18th century townhouses that now house expensive condominiums and restaurants. Cross Beekman Street and continue down Front Street to its end when you will be standing looking up at the Brooklyn Bridge.
Begun in 1869 and completed in 1883, it was labeled the eighth wonder of the world. Turn to your left and walk up to Water Street to the building on the corner at 279 Water.
It was built in 1801 and houses the oldest surviving saloon in New York. Today, the restaurant inside is a beloved retreat on Sunday mornings for their excellent brunch!
Make your way back to the heart of the seaport and take time to walk around on your own now that you are familiar with the area. This is a great place to bring children, because the Seaport Museum has so many activities for them every day. And it is a great way to get outside in the city and enjoy the sea air!
