Berlin, the capital city of Germany, is a stunning city break location for some of the most exciting and captivating nights outs in the heard of Europe. Where east met west, the night out comes to life with a rich diversity of opportunities to choose from. Here are 10 great options (in no particular order) to help to make your Berlin city break as memorable as possible.
Berghain/Panorama Bar
Where better to start in Berlin than with a trip to your local, friendly techno super-club set in the backdrop of a former power station. Even if you’re not a big fan of techno music, you’ll find it hard not to get involved with the spirit of the venue. It’s split into two areas, with the small Panorama open all weekend and the full on experience of Berghain’s super club open only on a Saturday night.
Photoautomaten
If you’re planning a night of bar hopping or weisse bier sampling on your city break to Berlin then you might want to make it a Photoautomaten bar crawl. The idea is that you visit the photo-booths on a trip around Berlin’s nightlife, taking a photograph at each stop, following a stein at the closest bar of course. A picture will paint a thousand words and leave you with some of the best lost memories of your time in Berlin.
The Berliner Philharmoniker
Whether techno clubs and bar crawls are your thing or not, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is an experience in itself. The orchestra tours frequently, so you’ll have to check whether they’re playing in Berlin and where they’ll be playing, but even if you can’t hunt them down, there are plenty of other options for classical music in Berlin, with the Berliner Philharmonie the home to the Berliner Philharmoniker and hosting a range of other classical events. Located just off the Tiergarten park, it’s great after an early romantic evening stroll.
Chez Jacki Bar
Lining the banks of the river Spree, Chez Jacki Bar is a great place to spend an evening. After watching the world flow by at bars along the Spree you can head to Chez Jacki’s club discoteque to dance the night away.
Club der Visionare
If you find yourself down by the Spree once again, then you might want to try Club der Visionare. It’s built on little stilts on an inlet to the river, making it a genuinely memorable entry to your Berlin city break. You can either enjoy a drink under the overhanging tree or wait for the evening to kick off with DJ’s later in the night.
The Friedrichshain Open Air Cinema
During the summer months, this is one of the coolest spots in the city. Operating between July and September, the cinema show a great range of classic films and box office smashes along with some more off beat special screenings and a selection from Berlin’s International Film Festival. Set in the recently renovated Volkspark Friedrichshain, it’s a novel way to spend a clear summer night in Berlin.
Alpen Stweck
Any city break to Berlin has got to be accompanied by a taste of German cuisine. Catering Austrian and South German dishes with an artistic ambience, Alpen Stweck provides a modern take on classic Germanic food set in the Mitte area of the city.
Salon Zur Wilden Renate
If you like your nights out a little more house-infused and slightly less polished than the likes of Berghain then Salon Zur Wilden Renate is a good bet. There’s an alternative and relaxed atmosphere, three main dance floors and a few cool nooks tucked away in the shadows.
The Bandeschiff
Pool, bar, sauna, is there anything that the Bandeschiff doesn’t have? Created by local artist Susanne Lorenz, the Bandeschiff was built out of the hull of a river cargo container. Open from 8am until midnight, with a bar by the entrance and DJs playing music in the evening, it’s got a lot of novelty value. They’re set in the East Berlin area of Treptow and have added a brilliant new lease of life to the area.
Entweder Oder
Another great place to feast on local German cuisine, Entweder Oder pulls out all the stops to lay on a fantastic Germanic feast. Roasts, grilled fish and schnitzel come together to make the restaurant a bit special. The menu is strictly organic and changes frequently, but the added touch of class comes from the regular art displays from local artists.
